This is your guide to staying active, healthy and ready for the new football season
When the football season ends, it’s easy to switch into full holiday mode. And while a break is important, the off season is actually one of the best opportunities for young players to reset, recover and quietly improve.
At Laceeze, we’re all about helping kids stay in sport even when matches pause. With insight inspired by ex-professional footballer Marc Pugh (@thefoodiefootballer) here are five simple tips to help young athletes make the most of their off season.
1. Rest Properly (But Keep Moving)
After months of training and matches, young bodies need time to recover.
Taking a break from intense football sessions for a couple of weeks allows muscles and joints to repair essential for growth and injury prevention.
But rest doesn’t mean doing nothing.
Light, fun movement keeps kids active without pressure:
- Family walks or bike rides
- Swimming on holiday
- Kickabouts with friends
- Gentle stretching or mobility
The aim is to recover without completely stopping activity.
2. Keep Nutrition Consistent
With fewer matches, energy needs might drop slightly but good nutrition habits should stay the same.
This is a great time to build simple routines:
- Balanced meals with protein, carbs and healthy fats
- Regular meal times
- Plenty of water throughout the day
Young athletes don’t need strict diets but they do need consistency and quality.
Think of food as fuel for growth, recovery and energy not just performance.
3. Build Strength the Smart Way
The off season is ideal for developing strength but for kids, that should always be age-appropriate (not pumping iron in the gym!) and fun.
Focus on:
- Core strength (balance, planks, coordination)
- Agility and movement drills
- Bodyweight exercises
- Games that build coordination
“Core and yoga is a massive part of my daily routine. It empowers the mind, strengthens the body, and creates a solid foundation.” – Marc Pugh
Stronger foundations = better balance, more confidence, and reduced injury risk when the season returns.
4. Reset the Mind
Football isn’t just physical, mindset matters too.
The off season is the perfect time for young players to:
- Reflect on their season
- Think about what they enjoyed
- Set a simple goal for next season
It doesn’t need to be complicated.
Encourage them to enjoy their sport without pressure or expectations.
5. Keep a Simple Routine
Without weekly matches, it’s easy to lose structure (We think this goes for parents and kids!!) and that’s where consistency can slip.
A simple routine helps maintain momentum:
- A couple of light training sessions each week
- Active days (playing, moving, exploring)
- Proper rest days
- Time away from football
Small habits done regularly will always beat short bursts of effort.
